After picking up Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals earlier on Thursday, the Leafs made a few moves to create some salary cap space for some added roster flexibility.

Ilya Lyubushkin appears to be ok after sustaining a head injury on Saturday. With days to go until the trade deadline, should the Maple Leafs check in on recently waived Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuzentsov?

Minutes after the Toronto Maple Leafs pulled the trigger on a trade to acquire Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals, the club placed defenseman William Lagesson on waivers.

The Maple Leafs acquired Edmundson from the Capitals in exchange for the New York Islanders' third-round pick and the Chicago Blackhawks' fifth-round draft pick in 2025. The Capitals also agreed to retain half of Edmundson's $1.75 million salary cap it left over from a previous trade with the Montreal Canadiens in the summer, leaving the Leafs with a cap charge of $875,000.

Before the trade, the Leafs had roughly $140k in salary cap space. They moved Conor Timmins over from IR to LTIR to free up an additional $1.1 million, which allowed the Leafs to have room for Edmundson. However, the Leafs are only permitted 23 players on their active roster (until Friday when the numerical roster limit is removed). Outside of Matthew Knies, the Leafs had no other players on their roster that did not require waivers and thus Lagesson was moved to the non-roster while being moved to the waiver wire.

The 28-year-old Lagesson has four assists in 30 games. It's Toronto's preference that they would like to keep him in the fold for depth purposes. However, any team could claim the Swedish defender.

Once Lagesson clears, the Leafs would have approximately $1.14 million in cap space they could potentially use if they see a fit for another trade, after sending the defenseman down to

As for Timmins, the defenseman said he's "all good to go now" after recovering from mono and could be activated from LTIR at any moment since he has far exceeded the mandatory 10 days and 24 required to sit out.
