The left-shot defenseman would add to Toronto's depth, but they don't appear to be the frontrunners to land the 221-pounder.

NHL teams were busy on Wednesday as several teams picked up new players ahead of Friday's NHL trade deadline, but the Toronto Maple Leafs were not one of them.

While Noah Hanifin went from the Calgary Flames to the Vegas Golden Knights and Vladimir Tarasenko went from the Ottawa Senators to the Florida Panthers, the Maple Leafs have been on the outside looking in.

But there's plenty of time and the Maple Leafs appear to have their eye on 6-foot-5 defenseman Joel Edmunson.

"The big left shot Dman has a number of clubs circling," TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger posted on X on Thursday.

The 221-pounder would certainly fit as the type of defender that Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving would like. The 30-year-old has played on Washington's third pair this season and has one goal and five assists in 44 games this season.

The Leafs don't have a lot of salary cap room and the ability to squeeze the player's $3.5 million total cap is already offset by the fact that the Montreal Canadiens are already retaining half of it in a deal with the Capitals this summer. The Leafs could get Edmundson's $1.75 cap hit reduced even further to $875,000 without the need for a third party.

Edmundson is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2023-24 season.
