Dubas will officially depart on June 30 when his contract expires following Monday's announcement from the now-former GM that the previous year was difficult on his family.
Kyle Dubas will not be returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs as general manager.
The club officially announced that Dubas will not be returning in the GM role four days after he expressed how difficult the previous season was on his family.
"It's been a taxing year on them and that's very important to me," he said. "My family is a hugely important partner in what I do. So, for me to commit without having a fuller understanding of what this year took on them is probably unfair of me to answer," Dubas said. "I wish I can give you more but I haven't had those discussions yet, but it was a hard year on them."
Toronto Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan will hold a news conference at 3 p.m. to discuss the situation further.
"I would like to thank Kyle for his unwavering dedication over these last nine seasons with the organization, including his last five as General Manager," Shanahan said in a release. "Kyle fostered a great culture within our dressing room and staff and consistently pushed to make our team better season over season. We wish Kyle and his family the best moving forward and thank him for his valuable contributions.”
Shanahan's statement seemingly closes the door that Dubas would remain with the club in any capacity. It's expected that Shanahan will address the GM vacancy and a path moving forward.
Dubas first joined the Maple Leafs as an assistant GM on July 22, 2014. He went 221-109-42 (.651) in five seasons as GM of the club and made the playoffs in all five seasons.
In 2023, the Maple Leafs won a round for the first time in 19 years but fell to the Florida Panthers in five games in Round 2.
