Cronin joined the Maple Leafs coaching staff in 2011 and served in the assistant coaching role there until 2014.
Another former Toronto Maple Leafs coaching alumni has landed an NHL head coaching gig.
The Anaheim Ducks announced on Monday that Greg Cronin will be their new head coach, succeeding another former coach in Toronto’s system, Dallas Eakins.
Cronin was hired to become an assistant with the Maple Leafs in the fall of 2011. At the same time of his appointment, the Leafs added Scott Gordon to work under head coach Ron Wilson, while simultaneously announcing the dismissals of assistants Keith Acton and Tim Hunter.
Cronin’s tenure ended in Toronto under head coach Randy Carlyle in 2014. Carlyle was dismissed from his position a year later.
The 60-year-old Cronin gets gifts first NHL head coaching gig after 38 years of coaching at various levels, including 13 years as an NHL assistant.
“I'm excited and honored to be named head coach of the Anaheim Ducks," said Cronin in a team statement. "This team has a fantastic future ahead, and I'm very grateful to the Samueli family and Pat Verbeek for entrusting me with this amazing opportunity."
