The Arizona Coyotes signed Galchenyuk to a one-year contract on July 1.
Alex Galchenyuk appears to be on the move again.
The Arizona Coyotes announced on Thursday that they are terminating the one-year, two-way contract he signed with the club just 12 days prior.
No explanation was given by the club, who signed Galchenyuk to the one-year deal that was worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $225,000 at the minor-league level according to PuckPedia.com. The fact that the Coyotes went out of their way to say they will not provide any comment leaves a rather ominous meaning behind it.
Katie Strang of The Athletic reports that Galchenyuk was arrested on several charges on July 9th by the Scottsdale Police Department. including private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, Threatening or Intimidating.
According to Craig Morgan of PHNXSports.com, the NHLPA is reviewing the matter.
Galchenyuk was limited to just 11 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season and spent most of his time with their AHL affiliate. On June 23, his rights were traded to the Nashville Predators in the deal that saw the club trade forward Ryan Johansen to Colorado at a 50 percent discount ($4 million average annual value). It was reported that the Predators didn't have any interest in signing Galchenyuk and the move was done to get the Avalanche to stay under the maximum-allowable 50-player contract limit.
Galchenyuk joined the Maple Leafs in the pandemic-shortened 2021 season as a reclamation project. There appeared to be some promise there as the third overall pick from the 2012 NHL Draft scored four goals and eight assists in 26 games with the club. He played in six of Toronto's seven games against the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the 2021 playoffs. Unfortunately, his tenure was probably most remembered for a neutral zone turnover in the overtime of Game 5 of that series that helped the Canadians stave off elimination. The Canadiens went on to win the series in seven games and continued a Cinderella run all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
