Drafted in fifth overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL Draft, Luke Schenn is returning to Toronto.
SEATTLE — Luke Schenn is returning to the city where his NHL career began.
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired defenceman Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft.
The 33-year-old Schenn began his career with the Maple Leafs after being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft. There were lofty expectations for the defenseman early in his career and he had to battle to stay in the league but carved himself a role as a steady bottom-pair defenseman where he twice won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lighting in 2020 and 2021.
Schenn is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He carries a salary cap hit of $850,000.
It's was the third trade of the day for Kyle Dubas. In the span of a little more than an hour, the Leafs GM traded defenseman Rasmus Sandin to Washington for defenseman Erik Gustafsson and Boston's first-round pick in 2023.
Dubas also traded Pierre Engvall to the New York Islanders for a third-round pick in 2024.
