NASHVILLE — Sheldon Keefe will be back behind the bench next season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
General Manager Brad Treliving confirmed that the head coach will return for a fifth season during his media availability on Tuesday afternoon.
Although he has a season remaining on his current deal as head coach of the Maple Leafs, an offseason of uncertainty began when the club was eliminated by the Florida Panthers in five games of their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series.
Kyle Dubas was relieved from his duties as general manager of the club in the aftermath and replaced by Treliving a short time later.
During his media availability as the new GM, Treliving said he was going to meet with Keefe and complimented the coach. Reports began to surface over the last month that Treliving and Keefe were both involved in the process to find a new assistant coach to fill the void left by Spencer Carbery, who became head coach of the Washington Capitals. Keefe's involvement in the process signaled the likely return behind the bench.
Keefe has a 166-71-30 (.678) record over four seasons as head coach of the Maple Leafs, but has just one playoff series victory in that span.
