The Maple Leafs are the most expensive fan experience for a family of four according to a ‘fan cost’ index.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs consistently ranked as the most valuable team in the NHL, it comes as little surprise that the club has ranked as the most expensive team to support.
According to a study conducted by USBettingReport, the Leafs ranked at the top of the list using a calculation in which they call a 'Fan Cost Index'. The metric calculates the total cost of taking a family of four to a sporting event. It considers the prices of four average-price tickets, two small draft beers, four small soft drinks, four regular-size hot dogs, parking for one hour, two game programs, and the two least-expensive, adult-size adjustable caps.
The Leafs topped the list at $697.75 based on that number. It's not a huge surprise given the history of the club and the loyal hockey following. Perhaps the most surprising is that it only represented an 11 percent increase from 2012.
Other teams around the league are nipping at their heels. The Tampa Bay Lightning saw a massive 70 percent increase from their numbers in 2012. This was likely bolstered in recent years by winning two Stanley Cups and their consistent track record.
