Dubas enlisted the help of the Chris Armstrong of the Wasserman Agency, the same company that represents Toronto Maple Leafs All-Star Auston Matthews.

The NHL Players' Association is currently investigating the connection between former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas and his agent at Wasserman agency for a potential violation of the certified agent regulations that govern agent activities, according to DailyFaceoff.com's Frank Seravalli.

During his recent negotiations with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Dubas was represented by Chris Armstrong from Wasserman Sports, which also represents Toronto superstar Auston Matthews.

According to the NHLPA Certified Agent regulations, agents are prohibited from representing or providing services to any officer or employee of an NHL club. Armstrong is not currently certified by the NHLPA and therefore not subject to discipline by the association and primarily works as a golf agent/

The NHLPA now faces the question of whether agents working in different divisions or branches of the same agency are also prohibited from representing hockey executives on the opposing side.

According to Seravalli, several NHL-certified agents from rival agencies firmly believe that this situation is clearly prohibited under regulations.

"Based on the NHLPA Certified Agent regulations, the rule appears to apply only to certified agents individually and not to the entire agency they belong to. The regulation states, 'Agents are prohibited from … representing, providing services to, either directly or indirectly, or engaging in or proposing to engage in business ventures with … any officer, employee or independent contractor of an NHL Club, other Professional Hockey Club or Canadian Major Junior Hockey Club or any other entity affiliated with any of the foregoing, including but not limited to coaches, general managers, scouts and locker room personnel,'" Seravalli writes.

After some last-minute negotiations, the Maple Leafs elected not to renew Dubas' contract as general manager of the club following the expiration of his existing contract on June 30. He has reportedly met with the Pittsburgh Penguins about their front-office openings.
