The former Toronto Maple Leafs player was one of several candidates being considered for Toronto's vacant assistant coaching position.
A reunion between the Travis Green and the Toronto Maple Leafs will not be in the cards.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Green will join the New Jersey Devils as an assistant coach, filling the vacancy that was opened up when Andrew Brunette departed to become the new head coach of the Nashville Predators.
Green served recently as a head coach for the Vancouver Canucks but was dismissed from the position on Dec. 6, 2021, as part of an overhaul that also saw GM Jim Benning also relieved of his duties.
The 52-year-old had an additional year remaining on his contract at the time of the firing.
The Maple Leafs are on a search for a new assistant after Spencer Carbery left the team to become the new head coach of the Washington Capitals.
Green could have been a good fit for Toronto, looking for an offensive-minded assistant. In his three years as a player with the Maple Leafs, Green had 23 goals and 35 assists in 181 regular season games. He was also on the Maple Leafs team that last played in a conference final (2002).
