The list of candidates for the Toronto Maple Leafs open GM position continues to grow. And true to team president Brendan Shanahan’s desires, they all have previous experience.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on the 32 Thoughts podcast on Friday that he believed an interview with former Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving had already been conducted this week. He also adds that Jason Botterill, Marc Bergevin and Peter Chiarelli are also set to be interviewed for the positions.

DailyFaceoff.com's Frank Seravalli confirmed the same candidates as well.

Botterill served as general manager of the Buffalo Sabres for three seasons before his tenure ended in June of 2020. The 47-year-old is currently the assistant general manager of the Seattle Kraken.

Marc Bergevin was GM of the Montreal Canadiens for over nine seasons. In 2021, his team upset the Maple Leafs in the opening round of the playoffs and went on a Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Four months later, the 57-year-old was dismissed from his position and the Canadiens began a massive rebuild. He currently works for the Los Angeles Kings in an advisory role to GM Rob Blake.

Peter Chiarelli is the only candidate mentioned who has twice been the GM of an NHL franchise. He first served in that capacity with the Boston Bruins from 2006 to 2015. Nine days after his dismissal from the Boston position, he joined the Edmonton Oilers as their GM for four seasons.

Following his dismissal from Edmonton, Chiarelli as served as the vice president of hockey operations for the St. Louis Blues.

The Maple Leafs are searching for a new GM after electing not to renew the contract of Kyle Dubas last week. Dubas has been linked to the Pittsburgh Penguins' open front-office positions.

It's expected the Leafs will continue to interview more candidates with Treliving seen as a front-runner for Toronto's position. There is an urgency for the Maple Leafs to have a candidate in place who can make decisions quickly. Auston Matthews is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Leafs on July 1 and it's not clear if he will. Both he and Mitch Marner have full no-move clauses that kick in on the same day.
