After a lengthy break in the schedule, many Toronto Maple Leafs who would normally take an optional morning skate off elected to take the ice ahead of their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb. 10.
That included Sheldon Keefe.
The Maple Leafs head coach said he elected to take the ice given the increased participation so that he could interact with more of the players, but he did more than that.
Keefe demonstrated his skills when a group of players swarmed Joseph Woll in a common scoring drill typically seen at the end of practices and warmups. It broke up when Keefe wired a wrist shot past Woll.
Before coaching, Keefe spent parts of five seasons playing professional hockey and played in 125 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2000 to 2003.
After his pre-game availability, Keefe was complimented by a reporter for his goal, to which he said he hoped the cameras were off during that time.
We hate to break the news to him.
