The Marlies add another forward on an AHL contract.

Jay O'Brien has signed a one-year AHL deal with Toronto, making him eligible to play for the Marlies and the ECHL's Newfoundland Growlers this year.

O'Brien, who's spent a lot of time at center in college, was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round (18th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft.

The 23-year-old has spent the last three seasons with Boston University, with this past year being his best yet. The Hingham, Massachusetts native scored 32 points in 39 games last season. He also helped the team capture the NCAA (Hockey East) Championship last spring.

Over the course of his time at Boston University, O'Brien put up 80 points (36 goals, 44 assists) in 79 games. He also played for Team USA at the World Junior Championship in 2019 where they won a silver medal.

O'Brien has quite a fascinating career path. After being drafted in 2018, he committed to Providence College where he scored only five points in 25 games. Following that year, O'Brien went to the BCHL, serving as an alternate captain with the Penticton Vees.

The 23-year-old put up an impressive 66 points (25 goals, 41 assists) in 46 games, leading him back to the NCAA with Boston University.
