William Nylander doesn’t quite understand what the fuss is all about.
The Toronto Maple Leafs forward conducted an interview in Stockholm, Sweden on Wednesday with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek for an upcoming episode of the '32 Thoughts' podcast and was asked about his current contract status with the club.
"'Lots of time' to sort out his contract," Friedman shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "Says there’s nowhere else he wants to be than Toronto. Doesn’t see why everyone is spending so much time discussing it."
Nylander will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2023-24 season and has been eligible to sign a contract extension with the club since July 1. Since that time, there have been reports about Nylander's asking price and that both the player and club remain far apart in the negotiation process.
The 27-year-old forward is coming off a career-high 40 goals and 47 assists in 82 games with the Leafs last season. His existing contract carries an annual salary cap hit of just under $7 million per season.

Perhaps complicating matters is the fact that Toronto's top star — Auston Matthews — has also not signed a contract extension with the club as of yet.
As players around the league who share Nylander and Matthews' contract expiry date sign extensions, Nylander's situation, in particular, gets a lot of chatter on social media.
The '32 Thoughts' interview has yet to drop and more information will be added.
