The Arizona Coyotes have a lot to reflect on as they lost 5-3 to the Winnipeg Jets Saturday afternoon in demoralizing fashion.
Morale was high for the Coyotes going into this game coming off of a gritty 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.
Arizona picked up right where they left off from Thursday night. Coach André Tourigny mentioned during the postgame that the Coyotes played real solid defensively to start the game. They also had their best offensive period maintaining puck possession while ending the period up 1-0 from a J.J. Moser goal.
Everything would change in the second period.
Despite the Coyotes taking a 2-0 lead early on in the second period, Winnipeg completely dominated offensive zone time.
The Jets were just completely out muscling Arizona and looked like the much faster team at most points.
The Coyotes came out the gate strong yet all of the sudden began to commit turnover after turnover and by the end of the second period, the score was tied at three goals a piece.
It would get worse for the Coyotes in the third period. Nino Niederreiter completed his hat trick and the Jets outscored Arizona 2-0 in the final period of play to cap off their comeback win.
The Coyotes have been all over the place in terms of their play. One game they will look like a potential playoff team and the next they revert back to their old form that many fans are unfortunately used to seeing all too much.
If Arizona’s goal is indeed to become a playoff caliber team, playing consistent hockey has to be a point of emphasis for them.
If there are any positives to take away from this afternoon, Matias Maccelli continued his fantastic play really dominating through his impressive puck handling and playmaking skills while the fourth line of Liam O’Brien, Jack McBain and Alexander Kerfoot still played their same physical brand of hockey.
The Coyotes have a couple days off before they are set to play the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night.
