Just a week after a heartbreaking 3-2 OT loss to Columbus, Utah HC sought to avenge the loss. Little did they know, Dylan Guenther would give the Blue Jackets a taste of their own medicine.
Lightning may never strike twice, but Dylan Guenther sure does.
In a 3-2 overtime win against the Blue Jackets, it was once again Guenther who scored the game-winning goal, marking his second consecutive game with a game-winner.
To make the win even sweeter for Utah, Guenther's game-winner avenged an overtime loss to Columbus just a week ago, when Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski won the game 3-2 in overtime.
"When you're in those situations more often, you get more comfortable and more confident," said Guenther.
Guenther has found himself in these situations often recently, especially considering it was just a couple days ago when he delivered a last second buzzer beater against the Philadelphia Flyers.
So when the situation arose again tonight, he certainly looked comfortable and confident when he found himself wide open with a breakaway opportunity.
After recognizing that the Blue Jackets were offside and that goalie Connor Ingram was coming to collect the puck, Guenther stayed behind all of Columbus's players and waited
"I saw they were offside, so once I saw Ingy [Connor Ingram] got it, I kind of figured he was going to shoot it," Guenther said. "I didn't even really see it, I just started skating... got a little bit lucky that it came back to me, but we'll take it."
And just like that, Ingram's quick-thinking shot ricocheted perfectly off the glass divider and landed right in front of Guenther. With Justin Danforth trailing too far behind, the only line of defense left for the Blue Jackets was goalie Elvis Merzlikins.
With Guenther's first shot, Merzlikins held strong, closing his legs at the perfect moment to make the save. But the puck bounced back to Guenther, leaving Merzlikins out of position and in need of a fast reaction. As he slid to the right with his legs outstretched, desperately trying to get into position, Guenther took his second shot under Merzlikins' legs to give Utah a second consecutive overtime win.
At first, it seemed that Columbus would likely get another 3-2 overtime win, as it had a three-man advantage after a pass from Clayton Keller in the neutral zone was intercepted by the Blue Jackets' Ivan Provorov. It looked inevitable that the Blue Jackets would get a goal with such an advantage.
But just as Columbus was getting its breakaway, a challenge by Keller forced Provorov to adjust his possession of the puck ever so slightly.
That slight hesitation Keller created proved pivotal because Columbus forward Sean Kuraly, who had previously pressured Keller into passing the puck to the neutral zone, would cross the blue line. With Kuraly over the line, Provorov couldn't pass it to him without an offside penalty being called.
So when Provorov passed the puck forward , Kuraly wouldn't be able to collect the puck with an offside penalty being called, leading to an eventual faceoff.
But rather than wait for an offside penalty to be called, Utah goalie Connor Ingram decided to aggressively skate out of the goal to collect the puck and pass it over all the Blue Jackets' players.
That decision proved to be a game-winning choice by Ingram, earning him his fourth career assist and his first of the season.
"I think we had nerves at times, but I think we controlled our emotions much better and we were able to come back and play with a lot of passion and pace," said coach André Tourigny.
Guenther has only been back for two games with Utah, but his back-to-back game-winners in overtime show just how much this team has missed him.
Along with leading the team with seven shots on goal tonight, his speed, pace and offensive instincts have given Utah a huge boost right when it needed it most. Prior to his return, Utah had lost five straight games and even lost Logan Cooley during that stretch.
If Utah's offense can continue to play like it did in this game, with other players besides Keller and Guenther making plays—like when Lawson Crouse scored his fourth goal in Utah's past six road games or Olli Määttä scoring an unlikely goal that deflected off Werenski—Utah has a great chance to win its upcoming road games.
Hopefully, Utah can find ways to win without going to overtime, as it has played four overtime games in the last five.
But for now, Utah has a great chance to head into the 4 Nations break on a high note, with only two games remaining on its schedule against the Hurricanes and Capitals. Those games will take place back-to-back on Feb. 8 and 9, this Saturday and Sunday.
