One former Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman has really slotted into a concrete role with the Coyotes through this season.
That defenceman is Travis Dermott who has made an impact for the Coyotes both on and off the ice.
Dermott played five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks during the 2021-22 season.
Due to a concussion, Dermott only suited up in 11 games for the Canucks last season which he described as an ‘emotional rollercoaster’ via Patrick Brown.
This past summer, the 26-year-old signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Coyotes in hopes to earn a spot on the team.
Dermott fully took advantage of his opportunity, earning a roster position after displaying what he can bring to the table through training camp.
While Dermott’s one point in 14 games don’t look all that impressive, his impact has gone far beyond just the stat sheet.
He has really become a reliable defenceman for the Coyotes, playing 16:22 minutes per game while regularly getting a spot in the lineup. Dermott is a smooth skater and is steady at both ends of the ice.
Aside from his individual play, Dermott is just a warm person to be around as he always seems to be smiling and gives thoughtful and honest answers when talking with the media.
Dermott helped change the way players could voice their support for certain causes. His use of pride tape in a game earlier this season to show his support for the LGBTQ+ helped reverse the NHL’s original ban on pride tape which ultimately made national headlines.
It looked like Dermott’s NHL career was in jeopardy, but he has now certainly found a home with the Coyotes.
