Breaking News: The Utah Mammoth have traded Matias Maccelli to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in 2027. The conditions on the pick are that it upgrades to a 2029 second if Maccelli scores more than 51 points this season and the Maple Leafs qualify for the playoffs.
The trade comes as Maccelli and the Mammoth felt it was better for him to see a change of scenery, as he was often a healthy scratch. The Maple Leafs see him as a player that could step into the top six and provide them some more point production. If he is playing in their top six for the bulk of the season, the expectation would be that he would end up scoring more than 51 points, which is good for Utah as they would be getting that 2029 second-round pick in a time where they would be looking to deal picks in order to upgrade their own club.
The Finnish native had eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points in 55 games. However, in years prior, he had 49 points in 2022–23 and 57 in 2023–24. Unfortunately, his fit with the Mammoth just wasn't there anymore, and now he will get a new opportunity to play with the Maple Leafs.
As it stands right now, this trade will push the Mammoth up to $18.41 million in projected cap space as they look to land a big-name player this free agency
