With the 2025 NHL free agency right around the corner, there have been plenty of teams saying that the Utah Mammoth are the team to watch.
With a projected $16 million in cap space, Utah has the ability to go big-game hunting and spend money on some big-name players to drastically improve their roster. As of right now, the Mammoth have a few positions that need to be filled, and they can do that by signing free agents.
Their biggest target, now that it seems Mitch Marner is off the board, should be Brock Boeser. He wants a quieter market than Vancouver, and Utah could be the best option for him. They’ve been known to treat their players very well over the past year, and that could also appeal to him. His projected contract is $8.5 million over six years, which would fit in well with the rest of the Mammoth's core.
The other option should be Nikolaj Ehlers, who is testing free agency and could be a good fit on the wing of Utah's top line. He is a proven scorer that the organization is missing alongside Clayton Keller. Together, they could score 40 goals each and get the Mammoth into the playoffs. His projected contract is a little less than Boeser’s, at $8.1 million over six years.
The last option that could be of interest to them is Brad Marchand, who is now a two-time Stanley Cup winner. He’s the rat that everyone loves to hate, but when he’s on your team, you absolutely love him. He would be able to step in and help this team grow both on and off the ice. Although Utah may not be his first choice, the fit is undeniable. His projected contract is $7 million over 2–3 years, which could be appealing to GM Bill Armstrong.
July 1 is almost here, so we'll get some more answers on who they want to target on the open market. However, it wouldn’t be shocking if Utah goes after someone big and wins the opening day of free agency.
