Hats of all kinds rained down onto the ice for the first time at Delta Center, thanks to a remarkable showing from Nick Schmaltz, who secured Utah's first home hat trick in a 6–3 win over the San Jose Sharks.
Though it was Schmaltz's second career NHL hat trick, it was only the second ever in Utah Mammoth history and the first to have tossing their own hats onto the ice. Schmaltz joins Barrett Hayton as the only players to register a hat trick for the Mammoth, with Hayton’s coming last year on the road against the Kings.
Utah Mammoth's Projected Lineup vs. San Jose Sharks - First Friday Night At Home
Utah Mammoth's home opener energy continues! See tonight's lineup, Liam O'Brien's debut, and potential fight with Ryan Reaves.
The Utah Mammoth are back in action tonight, this time against the San Jose Sharks, at home at the Delta Center.
The other night against the Calgary Flames, they had a home opener to remember. They introduced their new mascot "Tusky" but most importantly, they won. The atmosphere was electric, and tonight, the expectation is that it'll be the same, with their first Friday night game at home.
As they prepare to face the Sharks, they really aren't any changes to their lineup. Kailer Yamamoto is out and fan favourite Liam O'Brein is in. That move could be in response to Ryan Reaves being in the Sharks lineup. So, expect a potential fight between those two.

The new mascot comes after the team announced a new identity and logo this past offseason. Now, they have a mascot that actually looks like a Mammoth and has the potential to become a fan favourite around the NHL.
Except for one fan base in particular, the Nashville Predators. Their mascot, Gnash, has already taken to social media to mock Tusky, pointing out how similar he looks to the Predators' mascot.
Utah Mammoth's Dominant Defense Leads to 3-1 Win Over Flames
Everybody may be wondering when Utah’s offense will start to blossom — and rightfully so. After all, the biggest move the Mammoth made this season was acquiring JJ Peterka to help boost their offensive production.
Everybody may be wondering when Utah’s offense will start to blossom — and rightfully so. After all, the biggest move the Mammoth made this season was acquiring JJ Peterka to help boost their offensive production.
But when Utah has the defensive performance it just did in its 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames in its home opener, it won’t matter if the offense needs some time to warm up.
Allowing only one goal on a Calgary power play and just eight Calgary shots on net through the first two periods, the Mammoth defense hardly let Calgary come close to the net.
Introducing Utah Mammoths' New Mascot: Tusky, the Blue-Mohawked Mammoth
Tusky introduced himself for the first time with a surprise appearance prior to Utah's Mammoths puck drop against the Calgary Flames.
A lot has changed for the Utah Mammoth. The team suddenly relocated to Utah, underwent a massive rebrand, received thousands of fan votes to decide a new name, faced challenges at the trademark office over its attempt to become the Utah Yeti and saw the Delta Center renovated with hockey specifically in mind.
And that’s not even getting into the players’ first season on the ice — one of their most encouraging seasons in years. Yes, there have been a lot of changes. But one question had yet to be answered: Who would be the team’s new mascot?

The Utah Mammoth lost last night against the Chicago Blackhawks and fell to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Utah Mammoth lost last night against the Chicago Blackhawks and fell to 1-2-0 on the season.
Unfortunately, after all the offseason buzz, the club is off to a slow start. However, it shouldn't cause too much panic amongst the fanbase.
Despite being 1-2-0, they’ve played some good hockey. Some of their stars are showing up and scoring, they just aren’t doing enough to win games. That’s something that can be fixed with a few practices and, most importantly, some time spent watching film.

The long-awaited first career goal of JJ Peterka in Utah Mammoth colors came against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Unfortunately, Peterka would be the only Mammoth to score in a 3-1 loss on the road in Chicago.
In a game where Utah couldn’t generate enough offense, Peterka had one of the few shining moments for the Mammoth in the beginning of the third period.
Facing a double team on the boards, Peterka successfully delivered a pass to Guenther behind the net. With the sudden lane opening for Guenther and no Chicago player in the immediate vicinity, the Blackhawks collapsed to the middle of the ice to try to stop Guenther’s attempt.
From The Archive: Jersey Hound - Utah Mammoth
The Hockey News has released its archive to all THN subscribers: 76 years of history, stories, and features.
A NEW NAME MEANS new uniforms, and the freshly minted Utah Mammoth have come out with strong openers that will debut next season. The main logo is, of course, the titular pachyderm with a mountainous crown, reflecting Utah’s Wasatch mountain range. But look closely at the beast, and you’ll also see an outline of the state itself.
That outline is also used for the shoulder logo on the ‘rock black’ jersey, while the light jersey comes in ‘salt white,’ with both featuring ‘mountain blue.’ The stairstep lettering on the light sweater also has angled crossbars on the ‘A’ and ‘H’ to reflect steep mountain peaks. It’s all very fun. Tusks up, Utah.
Can Utah Mammoth Hold Steady Without Sean Durzi?
Just when Utah thought defenseman injuries were a thing of the past, the team suffers a blow on its blue line.
Just when Utah thought defenseman injuries were a thing of the past, the team suffers a blow on its blue line.
Right before a Dylan Guenther game-winner in a 3-2 overtime win against Nashville, Sean Durzi suffered quite the blow when a collision from Predators forward Jonathan Marchessault sent him to the ice hard.
It was evident that the hard fall, primarily on his right arm, had hurt Durzi, especially since he skated off immediately to the bench while Utah was pushing for an overtime goal.
