Utah Mammoth X AccountNow that Utah Mammoth is officially the team’s new name, it’s a good time to look back at the 13-month process and how exactly the name came to be.
From the start of their inaugural season, it was clear that fans would play a big role in naming the team. Everyone knew their voice would matter.
After 13 months, 850,000 votes across multiple rounds, and a few headline-making trademark hurdles, Utah’s ownership landed on "Utah Mammoth" as the final choice.
“When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented—going through four rounds of community voting, including getting feedback not only on potential names but also on potential logos,” owners Ryan and Ashley Smith said in a statement. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we're building together.”
In the final round of voting, fans got to vote on both the name and logo. Mammoth came out on top, and the organization moved quickly to get everything finalized ahead of today’s (May 7) official reveal.
What makes "Mammoth" such a fitting name is the local connection. As highlighted in their launch video, mammoth fossils have been found across the state—along the Bonneville shorelines, Bear Lake, Orem, Fillmore, Park City, and Lake Powell. A full skeleton was even discovered in Huntington Canyon back in 1988.
Fun Facts About the Name & Logo:
The secondary and tertiary logos include “UTAH” with a tusk running through the U, and a standalone U with the same tusk design.
As for the jerseys, they’ll look similar to last season’s. The home jersey will now feature the Mammoth logo on the front and the Utah logo on the shoulder. The away jersey will stick with "Utah" across the chest, with the Mammoth logo on the shoulders—much like how the Carolina Hurricanes use their primary mark on home jerseys and their city/state on the road.
Lastly, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and the Utah ownership group will hold a press conference at Delta Center today (May 7) to celebrate the announcement.
The team has also launched the first wave of Utah Mammoth merch, including T-shirts, hats, and hoodies—available now at the team store inside the Delta Center. Jerseys aren’t available just yet.
