The Utah Mammoth have elected for salary arbitration on their restricted free agent forward Jack McBain.

Saturday, McBain elected to avoid salary arbitration after the deadline for the players. However, Sunday was the deadline for NHL teams to decide if they wanted to go to arbitration.

The catch with teams choosing to go this route is that it takes away the option for an offer sheet. So now, McBain is no longer eligible to receive a contract from any other teams, allowing Utah and McBain to take more time to work on a contract without pressure.

As Elliotte Friedman reported on his X account, if both sides wish to pursue a two-year deal, it would allow the player to go to unrestricted free agency when it expires. That adds some urgency for the Mammoth to consider a longer-term deal instead.

For Utah, this is the best possible option for them. It takes away the chance of any other NHL teams signing McBain on the open market while also allowing them more time to reach an agreement that suits both parties and avoids unnecessary distractions.

Last season, McBain scored 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 82 games. In his four-year career, he has played in 241 games and scored 35 goals and 47 assists for 82 points.
