With the 2025 NHL Draft now less than 48 hours away, many hockey media outlets will release their mock drafts and predict how they feel the night will go. For me personally, my Utah Mammoth Mock Draft will be out tomorrow. However, all the hard work of trying to guess how the draft will unfold could be for nothing if the Mammoth decide to make one move.
That one move would be trading their fourth overall pick. There have been a ton of rumors regarding them potentially parting with the pick, and if that is true, it has the chance to drastically change how the draft night plays out.
If the Mammoth elect to trade down in the draft to select Brady Martin, the prospect most people believe they will take, then it opens the door for a team in the 7-12 range to trade up and depending on who they select, it could cause a ripple effect throughout the entire first round.
However, if they decide to pull off a huge splash and acquire someone like Jason Robertson or even Mitch Marner in a sign-and-trade, and that requires them to part with their fourth overall pick, it could end up putting a playoff team or Stanley Cup contender in the top five to add a highly skilled player to their roster.
Obviously, it is no secret that the Mammoth want to get better and fast, but they need to be smart with their fourth overall pick. If they can keep the pick and use it while still improving through trades, it would be ideal. If not, then they need to ensure that they are making not only the best move but also the smartest move for the organization.
