When the Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Florida Panthers, it didn’t take long for speculation to start swirling around Mitch Marner’s future.
In the days since, the rumors have only picked up. And in those conversations, one of the teams that keeps coming up is the Utah Mammoth.
A Marner-Utah pairing would make a lot of sense. The Mammoth were right in the mix for a playoff spot in their first season. Earlier this offseason, they revealed their new logo — and adding a superstar like Marner would be the kind of statement move that follows naturally.
To understand why Utah is even in this position, you have to go back to the March 7th trade deadline. GM Bill Armstrong made a seemingly small move that cleared a major roadblock. He shipped out the final year of Shea Weber’s contract to the Blackhawks, along with Aku Räty and the rights to Victor Söderström, in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick.
That deal wiped Weber’s $7.85 million off the books, and with only Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s $650,000 buyout still lingering, Utah now has the flexibility to spend. They’re projected to have around $21 million in cap space this summer.
Marner’s reported asking price is in the range of $13 million annually on a seven-year deal. Utah could go slightly above that — maybe even into the $13.5 to $14 million range — if it helps seal the deal and make him the face of the franchise alongside Clayton Keller.
If Marner is the player they’re going to chase, it wouldn’t be a shock. He’s the biggest name available, and Utah is the league’s newest team. They’ll want to make a splash — and landing Marner would be just that.
