For the first time in 92 years, Team USA has won the gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
After battling hard throughout the tournament, the USA carried that fight into the final game, where Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres ended it in overtime to beat Switzerland 1-0.
Utah had four players on Team USA, and they did exceptionally well. Logan Cooley led the way with four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 9 games, was a +3, and had 18 shots. The captain, Clayton Keller, had three goals and seven assists for 10 points, was a +3, and had 18 shots.
Michael Kesselring recorded one goal and three assists for four points, was a +7, and had 10 shots. Lastly, Josh Doan — who followed in his dad Shane Doan’s footsteps by winning gold at the Worlds — had one goal, no assists, was a +1, and had 7 shots on net.
Utah also had two other key pieces of their team in the tournament. Let’s check in on how they did.
Barrett Hayton and Team Canada were eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing to Denmark. He finished the tournament with one goal and one assist for two points in six games, was a +2, and had 14 shots.
Lastly, Karel Vejmelka and Czechia were also eliminated in the quarterfinals by Sweden. He played in five games and had a record of 3-2 with a 2.98 GAA and a .902 SV%. Unfortunately, Czechia couldn’t find a way to repeat after winning the tournament on home ice last year.
Now that the tournament has come to an end, attention turns to the Stanley Cup Finals — and for Utah fans and management, the focus shifts to the NHL Draft on June 27th and 28th.
