Over the last few days, there’s been plenty of buzz surrounding the Utah Mammoth and the possibility of them taking a big swing this offseason. It all started when Elliotte Friedman mentioned that he feels Utah is the team to watch this summer on the 32 Thoughts podcast. Since then, multiple follow-up reports have surfaced—including one suggesting Utah is open to moving the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
After moving up in the draft lottery, the Mammoth landed the fourth pick. But with a fairly deep prospect pool already in place, there’s reason to believe they could package that pick in a deal.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Utah would be targeting a young top-six forward if they move the pick. If that’s the route they take, a deal could very well go down at the draft.
There are players like Porter Martone or James Hagens that Utah could draft and build around for years to come. But it sounds like GM Bill Armstrong is leaning toward a more aggressive, win-now mindset—looking for players who can step in right away and help the team next season.
Could that open the door to a potential deal with Dallas for Jason Robertson? His name has been floating around ever since the Stars were eliminated. He fits what the Mammoth are reportedly after: a young, top-six forward who can produce now. It would take more than just the fourth overall pick, but Utah does have some pieces that could be included to make something work.
With each passing day, more news keeps trickling out about Utah’s plans to make noise this summer. One way or another, the next four to six weeks are going to be very interesting.
