Welcome to this edition of the Vancouver Canucks post-game analytics report. This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on Vancouver's most recent 5-4 overtime loss to the Montréal Canadiens.
Latest From THN's Vancouver Canucks Site:
The Canucks were dominated from an analytics perspective during their loss to the Canadiens. Montréal held a 24-13 even-strength scoring chances advantage while also winning the even-strength high-danger scoring chances battle 8-6. Vancouver's inability to create offensive chances is why they gave up a 3-1 lead and eventually lost out on an extra point.
Overall, the Canucks did a decent job of protecting the guts of the ice. While there were some lapses, the Canadiens only generated four high-danger shots, with Kevin Lankinen stopping three of them. That being said, Vancouver still gave up too many medium-danger shots, which was one of the reasons they lost this game.
Heatmap by Natural Stat Trick, VAN vs MTL, Jan 6, 2025As for the Canucks top line, that was the trio of Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. During their 11:37 of ice time, Vancouver held a 3-0 high-danger scoring chances advantage while the line recorded an xGF% of 76.33. In the end, the Canucks top line stepped up, finishing the game with a combined seven points.
Lastly, Vancouver's top defenceman was, once again, Quinn Hughes. In his first game back from injury, Hughes recorded two points and was on the ice for two even-strength high-danger scoring chances compared to zero against. Playing over 26 minutes, Hughes' strong play was one of the reasons the Canucks were able to comeback and snag a point in this game.
