Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

While the Canucks lost to the Avalanche, there were a lot of positive takeaways when it comes to the analytics. While Vancouver did give up more scoring chances at even strength, both teams were tied when it came to high-danger chances which shows the Canucks were at least able to keep up with the high-flying Avs. Vancouver also had the edge in expected goals for, posting an xGF% of 51.32%. While they were outscored 4-2 at even strength, it was a strong effort overall and one the team can be proud of. 

As for which line stepped up the most, that would be the trio of Dakota Joshua, Teddy Blueger and Conor Garland. In 7:13 of ice time, the Canucks third line outshot Colorado 4-0, had a 4-0 lead in high-danger scoring chances and produced an xGF% of 82.60%. This trio has been fantastic over the past handful of games and continues to bring value to Vancouver's lineup. 

One pairing that stood out on the blue line was Ian Cole and Noah Juulsen. While they were on the ice for two goals against, they played well together at even strength. In 10:07, the Canucks outshot the Avalanche eight to three, generated 50% more scoring chances and high-danger scoring chances as well as finished the night with an xGF% of 75.15%. As injuries pile up, it is an encouraging sign that they have developed some level of chemistry, as Vancouver could be forced to lean on them a little more over the next few weeks. 

Lastly, one player that stood out for the right reasons was Anthony Beauvillier. Not only did the winger find the scoresheet, he was just one of two Canucks to finish the game with an expected goals for over 1.0. He also showcased some strong defensive play, as his three blocked shots ranked second among all players, trailing only Cole's six. A player who has been given more responsibility over the past few games, it looks as though he is finally settling in after a rough start to the season.
