Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Despite being the better team from an analytics perspective, Vancouver could not hold onto their 3-1 third-period lead against Detroit. At even-strength, the Canucks held a 20-13 scoring chances advantage while also finishing the night ahead in high-danger chances by a count of nine to seven. Ultimately, Vancouver's inability to cash in on their chances cost them, leading to their second straight loss.
The heatmap is a good example of why the Canucks deserved to win this game. Vancouver did a great job creating chances from high-danger areas but had trouble beating Alex Lyon. As for the Red Wings, they had no problems converting on their chances, scoring on four of their seven high-danger chances recorded on the night.

On top of his goal and two assists, he finished the night with an even-strength xGF% of 66.85 and was the only player on either team to surpass 20 minutes of even-strength play. Finishing the night with a 6-2 high-danger chance advantage, he was fantastic in his game back in Detroit since being traded a year ago.
