The Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy is handed out to the WHL's most sportsmanlike player.
Vancouver Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes has been nominated for a WHL year-end award. The 19-year-old was named a finalist for the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy, awarded to the WHL's most sportsmanlike player. If Cootes wins, he will join Steve Tambellini, Cliff Ronning and Lonny Bohonos as the only three players to capture the award while also playing games for the Canucks.
Cootes has had an impressive 2025-26 campaign. After starting the season in the NHL, he returned to the WHL, where he recorded 63 points in 45 games split between the Prince Albert Raiders and Seattle Thunderbirds. Cootes has also been able to avoid the penalty box, as he finished the season with eight penalty minutes.
At the time of writing, Cootes and the Raiders have a 3-1 series lead in the first round of the 2026 WHL Playoffs. Over the first four games, the 2025 first-rounder has scored twice and recorded six points. Prince Albert is a favourite in the Eastern Conference this year and have their eyes set on representing the WHL in the 2026 Memorial Cup.
