After more than a decade of campaigning, former Vancouver Canucks forward Alexander Mogilny has officially been named to the Hockey Hall of Fame. This news comes after the 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame Class was announced on June 24, 2025.
Mogilny was originally drafted 89th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1988 and spent the first six seasons of his NHL career with them. He was traded to the Canucks in 1995 in exchange for Michael Peca, Michael Wilson, and a 1995 first-round pick. Mogilny spent the next five seasons with Vancouver, scoring 139 goals and 169 assists in 312 games played. His tenure as a Canuck came to an end after he was dealt to the New Jersey Devils for Brendan Morrison and Denis Pederson.
Mogilny’s claim to fame was his status as the first player to defect from the Soviet Union in order to play in the NHL. A prolific goal-scorer, he scored 55 in his first season with the Canucks — a stat that puts him third in franchise history in goals scored by a Canuck in a single season. He led Vancouver in scoring this season with 55 goals and 52 assists in 79 games played, with the second-highest being Trevor Linden’s 33 goals and 47 assists. Mogilny led the team in points the season after as well with 31 goals and 42 assists in 76 games, though he was unable to suit up for as many games the next three seasons due to injuries.
