In a surprising move, former Vancouver Canucks forward Andrei Kuzmenko was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers from the Calgary Flames on January 30, 2025. Only a little over a month later, he was traded yet again to the L.A. Kings in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. This is the third team Kuzmenko has been on since the start of the year.

This is Kuzmenko’s second trade since 2025 started. He was first signed out of the KHL by Vancouver, who grabbed him for league-minimum. In his rookie season, he scored 39 goals and put up 35 assists in 81 games played, earning himself a two-year contract worth $5.5M yearly. During the 2023–24 season, Vancouver sent him to the Calgary Flames in the deal that brought Elias Lindholm to the Canucks. He stuck in Calgary for a little less than a year before being moved to the Flyers.
Kuzmenko joins a Kings team that has struggled to produce offense but still sits in a playoff spot. While Kuzmenko hasn’t shown the same flashes of potential that he did in his first NHL season, if he is able to generate nearly the same level of offense from then, he could make L.A. a much more dangerous team. However, given the Kings’ style of play, a less defensively-inclined player like Kuzmenko may not see as much success.
The movement of more forwards around the league ahead of the Trade Deadline could give Vancouver the signs they need to start selling some of their forwards. It has been reported that Brock Boeser is likely to be moved today — which would give Vancouver a hefty set of assets given what most of today’s trades have shown thus far.
