McDonough was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Aiden McDonough has found a new home, signing a one-year AHL contract with the Charlotte Checkers. Initially drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft, the 24-year-old spent the entire 2023-24 season with the Abbotsford Canucks, recording 19 points in 58 games. McDonough did see some action with Vancouver during the 2022-23 campaign, playing six games while scoring his first career NHL goal.
Before making the jump to the pro level, McDonough had a strong NCAA career with Northeastern University. He had 124 points in 124 games and was named captain in his final season. McDonough made his NHL debut on March 26, 2023, against the Chicago Blackhawks, recording one shot on goal in 10:03 of ice time.
Despite heading into the offseason as a restricted free agent, the Canucks elected not to issue McDonough a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. McDonough will join a few other former Vancouver players on Charlotte's roster, including Zac Dalpe and Will Lockwood. Now 24, McDonough is one of four players from the Canucks 2019 draft class to play NHL games, joining Vasily Podkolzin, Nils Höglander and Artūrs Šilovs.
