Former Vancouver Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro has been named the AHL’s top goaltender for the 2024-25 season. The 25-year-old is currently playing for the Providence Bruins and has put together a record of 26-8-7 this year. The Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award is voted on by coaches, players and members of the media representing each of the league’s 32 teams.

Initally drafted 64th overall by the Canucks in 2017, DiPietro was a star in the OHL. He won the Memorial Cup in 2017 and was named OHL Goaltender of the Year in 2018. DiPietro also represented Canada at the 2019 World Juniors, where he was named one of the top three players on the team.

DiPietro's NHL career started while he was still in the OHL. He was called up on an emergency basis and made his debut on February 11, 2019. That night, Vancouver would lose 7-2 to the San Jose Sharks, with DiPietro making 17 saves.

After three more seasons, which included the 2020-21, where DiPietro served on the Canucks taxi squad and played only four games in the AHL, he was traded to the Boston Bruins on October 27, 2022. He was traded alongside defensive prospect Jonathan Myrenberg for Jack Studnicka. In the end, the trade was for the best as it meant DiPietro got a fresh start with a new organization.

DiPietro is now thriving in Providence. He was named to the All-Star Classic this season, and, as mentioned, was named the AHL's top goaltender for the 2024-25 season. This year, he also set new career bests in goals, save percentage and goals against, while also tying his career high with four shutouts.
