The 2025 NHL Trade Deadline has passed, and in a somewhat surprising turn of events, the Vancouver Canucks only traded one player in the week leading up to it. The day before the deadline, the Canucks traded Carson Soucy to the New York Rangers in exchange for San Jose’s third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The Rangers obtained this pick by sending Reilly Smith to the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas acquired this pick last year when they traded for Tomáš Hertl. With this trade, Soucy joins former teammate J.T. Miller in New York.

Soucy was signed by the Canucks in free agency in 2023, locking himself into a three-year deal worth an average of $3.25M annually. Prior to joining the Canucks, he played 108 games with the Minnesota Wild and 142 with the Seattle Kraken, putting up 31 and 37 points respectively. He played 40 games for the Canucks in his first season, missing more than half of the season due to a few different injuries. His two goals and four assists on the season were good for 22nd on the team in points.
One of Soucy’s most memorable moments with the Canucks came during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. During game 3 of the team’s second round series against the Edmonton Oilers, Soucy fought back against Connor McDavid by cross-checking the Oilers star after taking a slash.
This season, Soucy saw himself quickly get played out of a role on Vancouver’s blueline. He dressed in all but two games for the Canucks, with Elias Pettersson (D) coming into the linup in his stead. Soucy had a more difficult season this year, as the pairing of him and Tyler Myers faltered throughout Vancouver’s 61 games played prior to his trade. He finished his time in Vancouver with three goals and seven assists in the 2024–25 season.
