On a trade deadline day that saw high returns come for selling teams, the Vancouver Canucks finished the day without making a single deal. They traded defender Carson Soucy to the New York Rangers yesterday in exchange for a third-round pick, but aside from that, the team refrained from making any moves. Because of this, pending free agents Brock Boeser, Pius Suter, and Derek Forbort will remain with the team until the end of the season.

While there weren’t many rumours regarding trades for Suter and Forbort, it was widely believed by Canucks fans that Boeser would not remain in Vancouver by the time the deadline passed. Early on during trade deadline day, rumours emerged that Boeser would be moved. One particular team of note was the Carolina Hurricanes, who flipped Mikko Rantanen to the Dallas Stars and acquired Logan Stnakoven and two first-round picks. The New Jersey Devils were also reported to have been interested in Boeser.

Given the fact that middle-six players like Anthony Beauvillier and Brandon Tanev fetched second-round picks, fans are left to wonder what kind of package could have been received in exchange for Vancouver’s longest-tenured skater. Even a player like Suter, who is having a career-high season in terms of goalscoring, could have nabbed a decent return if traded to a contender.

Now that the deadline has passed, Vancouver will set their sights on re-signing Boeser in hopes of making sure he doesn’t leave the organization for nothing. With how the forward has been treated throughout contract organizations, namely being sidelined in favour of the team extending newer players, it’s unclear how these negotiations could go.

Since their opponents for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference haven’t improved themselves dramatically either, it looks as though the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Utah Hockey Club, and the Canucks will be fighting to clinch that last playoff spot. With only a month and a half left until the postseason, the Canucks’ future is completely up in the air.
