It appears that Vancouver Canucks prospect Anthony Romani is headed to the NCAA next season. According to a report from Ryan McArthur, the 19-year-old will be leaving the Barrie Colts of the OHL to join Michigan State. Romani was drafted by the Canucks 162nd overall in 2024, and has played the last four seasons in the OHL.

If Romani does head to the NCAA, he would be ineligible to sign an entry-level contract with Vancouver this off-season. The Canucks prospect is part of a growing number of CHL players headed to the NCAA for the 2025-26 season, which includes Calagry Flames prospect Henry Mews and Seattle Kraken prospect Tyson Jugnauth. The NCAA and CHL came to an agreement at the end of 2024, which would now allow players and prospects who have yet to sign pro deals to join the NCAA after their junior careers came to a close.

Romani has had a very successful career at the OHL level. In 223 regular-season games, he has scored 110 goals and recorded 203 points. Romani was also unstoppable during the 2025 OHL Playoffs, recording 24 points in 16 games.

While Vancouver can't sign Romani to an entry-level contract, they do still get to keep his rights. The Canucks will hold his rights until June 1 2026, which means a decision will need to be made by the end of next season. If Romani elects to stay in the NCAA for multiple years, he will become a free agent once his time at Michigan State is complete.
