The 2025 IIHF World Championship begins on Friday, May 9, with four Vancouver Canucks expected to take part. Historically, the Canucks have had a pretty decent turnout at the World Championships, as more often than not, the team’s season has ended by the time the tournament rolls around. The only time that Vancouver has not had any representatives in recent years is last season, when they were eliminated from the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers. Other than that, most World Championships have hosted a Canuck or two.

Four Canucks made an appearance during the 2023 IIHF World Championships, with only one of them coming back for 2025. Conor Garland suited up for Team USA, putting up eight points in 10 games played. He and Team USA finished in fourth place. Ethan Bear and Tyler Myers played for Team Canada, helping their country along to a gold medal after being dubbed the “worst Team Canada roster ever” (Myers’ words). While Bear did not register a point in his eight games played, Myers had one goal in his 10 appearances. Artūrs Šilovs started for Team Latvia, posting a .921 SV% in 10 games and bringing Latvia its first ever IIHF medal.
The 2022 IIHF World Championships were unfortunate for the Canucks, who watched defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson go down with injury six games into the tournament. Ekman-Larsson had been named Sweden’s captain for the tournament and had two assists in his time played. Sweden ultimately finished sixth in the tournament’s standings. Vancouver also had a player on the gold medal-winning Team Finland — Juho Lammikko, a Canuck for only the 2021–22 season. Rounding out the Canucks’ representation during this year’s tournament was Šilovs, who played in four games and registered a .952 SV%.
The Canucks were noticeably absent from the 2021 IIHF World Champtionships — reasonably so, given that the team finished their season late due to a month-long team-wide COVID-19 shutdown. Vancouver’s only representative in this tournament was Mikey DiPietro, who joined Team Canada for their gold medal win. DiPietro ultimately did not start, as goaltenders Darcy Kuemper and Adin Hill split the job.
2019 had the most Canucks representatives at the World Championships, as six different players took part in the tournament. The lone Canadian Canuck at the tournament was Troy Stetcher, who had a goal and two assists in the team’s silver medal effort. Thatcher Demko and Quinn Hughes joined Team USA, though their team finished seventh in the standings. Demko played in two games, posting a .920 SV% and winning both of his games (and splitting the starts with former Canuck Cory Schneider). Hughes put up three assists in the team’s eight tournament matches.
The Canucks were well-represented on Team Sweden, with their players ranging from all sorts of careers. Former fan-favourite Loui Eriksson scored a goal and three assists in Sweden’s six games. Jacob Markström only played once, as Henrik Lundqvist took most of the starts, with the ex-Canuck grabbing a win in his .941 SV% effort. Lastly, rookie Elias Pettersson built on his impressive Calder Memorial Trophy-winning season by posting two goals and five assists in his second World Championship.
Two Canucks took part in Sweden’s most recent World Championship gold medal win in 2018. Anders Nilsson started in five of Sweden’s games, making 100 saves on 106 shots faced throughout this span. He won all five games, posting a .943 SV% while doing so. Pettersson joined him on Team Sweden, recording a goal and two assists in the same number of games. Team Canada also had two Canucks on their roster, as DiPietro joined the roster but did not get any playing time. Soon-to-be-captain at the time, Bo Horvat, represented Canada at the World Championships for the first time in his career, scoring two goals and three assists in seven games. Horvat will also be joining Team Canada during the 2025 World Championships.
