The Canucks kicked off this week by making history against the Dallas Stars. In the first match of a two-game road trip, Vancouver let in three goals within the first half of the game. Despite scoring two more, they fell 5–2 by the final three minutes of the game. However, in a surprising turn of events, the Canucks scored three straight in the final minute of the game to send the match to overtime. Kiefer Sherwood got the eventual 6–5 game-winner in the extra frame, helping Vancouver to one of their most impressive comebacks of all time.
Though Vancouver didn’t play on Wednesday night, one particular Western Conference matchup impacted their season dramatically. An 8–7 shootout between the Minnesota Wild and the San Jose Sharks dropped the Canucks’ playoff chances to 0%, eliminating them from postseason contention.
With their postseason hopes dashed, Vancouver could have easily entered their Thursday night matchup against the Colorado Avalanche without much effort. However, with another impressive performance from Sherwood, as well as a solid game for goaltender Kevin Lankinen, the Canucks stole the show by taking a 4–1 win. One of the biggest talking points in this game was Elias Pettersson’s (D) first career NHL fight.
In other Canucks news from this week, the Abbotsford Canucks’ win-streak finally came to an end. They lost 5–4 in a shootout to the Calgary Wranglers on Friday night, but still collected one point to bring their total to 86. They also played on Saturday night, losing 3–1 on fan appreciation night. The next time Abbotsford will play a home game will be in the playoffs.
Lots happened on Saturday night. In their matchup against the Wild, Abbotsford rookie Ty Mueller made his NHL debut. As well, during the game, Derek Forbort and Yakov Trenin got into a fight. The fight ended in Trenin taking a cheap shot at Forbort and punching him while he was down, causing the Wild forward to get tossed from the game. No supplementary discipline was assessed to Trenin. After Vancouver lost 3–2 in overtime, Marcus Pettersson remarked that Trenin’s punch was “one of the dirtiest things [he’s] ever seen.”
