A home game and back-to-back road game sandwich.

A home game and back-to-back road game sandwich.

Welcome to The Weekly Rewind, a column published every Monday that recaps the past week of Vancouver Canucks hockey, including the team’s record, players with the highest stats, and more. This week, we’ll be looking at what the Canucks got up to from December 16 to 22.

Vancouver started their four-game week with an impressive 3–1 shutdown win against the Colorado Avalanche. New chants could be heard at Rogers Arena, as Kiefer Sherwood scored shorthanded, 5-on-5, and on an empty net to send fans’ hats flying onto the ice. It was his first career hat trick. Thatcher Demko had another standout performance with 30 saves on 31 shots against. It was a refreshing start to the week, especially given how last week ended.

On Wednesday, the Canucks kicked off the first game of their two-day road trip. They visited Utah Hockey Club for the first time, dropping the match 3–2 in overtime. Vancouver moved slowly out of the gates, allowing Utah to take possession for the majority of the first period. While they got the first goal of the game from Danton Heinen, the Canucks eventually succumbed to the Hockey Club’s offensive-zone pressure.

The Canucks played again the following night, losing 3–1 to the Vegas Golden Knights. Once again, Vancouver scored the opening goal, as Teddy Blueger put the puck in the net against the team he won the Stanley Cup with in 2023. Kevin Lankinen made his return to the Canucks’ crease for the first time since last Thursday, posting a .90 SV%.

Vancouver returned home on Saturday night to take on the Ottawa Senators, with this being their second-last game before the holiday break. After some back-and-forth action from both teams, the Canucks ultimately lost 5–4 in overtime, marking the second overtime loss they have had this week. They have three wins and seven losses in overtime this season.
