ESPN did a poll for the NHL's best defensemen in the NHL with players and hockey operations people, and this includes one GM who left Canucks d-man Quinn Hughes out of the top ten.
Greg Wyshynski details all the voting in his story with quotes from players and hockey ops people, which remained anonymous. After tabulating the votes, Hughes finished second place behind Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar.
Hughes was not ranked in last season's pole, signifying his insanely good improvement in all areas of the ice.
"But for us, nothing captures the excellence of Hughes' season more than his ascent in the NHL Positional Rankings. Last season, Hughes didn't appear in the top 10 among defensemen on any of our 20 ballots. This season, he received 146 points and appeared on 19 of 20 ballots -- although one NHL general manager left him off theirs completely," Wyshynski writes.
While only three general managers participated in this poll, it is certainly interesting that one didn't vote for him anywhere in the top ten. Given what he's done in his young career, it is hard to imagine him outside the top ten defensemen in the NHL.
Of the 20 participants, 19 voted for Hughes to be in the top ten. Hughes is the front-runner to win the Norris Trophy this season and leads all defensemen in points with 65, five more than Makar.
While the name of the GM won't come out, Hughes now has even more motivation to show up a high ranking doubter.
