A deep dive into the 2023-24 season of Vancouver Canucks defenceman Noah Juulsen.

Welcome to the 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks player review series. Over the summer, we will be taking a look at Canucks players performances from the 2023-24 season. Today's player is Noah Juulsen, who had one goal and seven points in 54 games.
Juulsen had his most productive season in the NHL last year, setting new career highs in games, points, blocks and hits. He was able to provide Vancouver with valuable minutes throughout the season, playing primarily on the team's third pair. A player that Rick Tocchet praised on multiple occasions, he should once again be able to provide solid play as the the Canucks seventh defenceman in 2024-25.
Juulsen's most significant contribution to the lineup was his physicality. He finished fourth on the team with 164 hits, while his 12.15 hits per 60 ranked 40th among skaters who played at least 41 games this past year. Ultimately, he understood his role and was able to deliver massive hits on a nightly basis.
When in the lineup, Juulsen also played a role on Vancouver's penalty kill. Averaging 1:55 per game, he was on the ice for 12 goals against in 103:48. He was also one of the leaders in shot blocks on the penalty kill, with his 27 ranking second only behind Ian Cole. Overall, Juulsen's effectiveness on the penalty kill played a role in the Canucks success this season and is one of the reasons he should be on the roster next year.
Lastly, one surprising statistic regarding Juulsen is that he had one of the top-average shot speeds in the NHL. According to NHL EDGE, Juulsen had an average shot speed of 113.15 km/hr, which ranked in the 98th percentile. The question now is, can he keep up that speed while increasing his shot total from 30 next season?
The best way to describe Juulsen is a player who understands his role and is ready to do whatever is needed to succeed. He is exactly what teams need in a seventh defenceman, as he showed time and time again that he is willing to put his body on the line for the betterment of the team. If he can bring the same level of physicality in 2024-25, Juulsen should once again be a valuable piece of Vancouver's lineup.
