With his 80th point this season, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes joins an elite group of U.S.-born defensemen.
Per the NHL, Quinn Hughes (13-67—80 in 71 GP) collected an assist and became the first defenseman to hit the 80-point mark in 2023-24, as well as the fifth different U.S.-born blueliner in NHL history to post 80 points in a season, following Brian Leetch (3x; most: 22-80—102 in 1991-92), Phil Housley (3x; most: 18-79—97 in 1992-93), Gary Suter (2x; most: 21-70—91 in 1987-88) and Mark Howe (2x; most: 24-58—82 in 1985-86).
Hughes earned his 80th point on J.T. Miller's powerplay goal in the third period.
Hughes joins Miller and Elias Pettersson as the third member of the 80-point club for the Canucks this season.
Hughes leads all defensemen in the NHL in points and assists. His 13 goals rank him ninth in the league. His goals and point totals are career highs, and he is just three assists away from passing his career high of 69, which he set last season.
Hughes is the unquestioned team leader and has helped his team get a chance to be the first team to clinch a playoff berth on Monday.
