Plenty of former Vancouver Canucks have carved out successful careers around the world after leaving the organization. Whether playing for some of the best teams in Europe or excelling in non-traditional hockey markets, these one-time Canucks continue to apply their trade outside of North America. Today, we look at forward Markus Granlund, who spent the 2024-25 season with Genève-Servette HC in the NL.

Granlund arrived in Vancouver via trade during the 2015-16 campaign. He was traded from the Calgary Flames for forward Hunter Shinkaruk. Prior to the trade, Granlund had spent two seasons with Calgary, bouncing between the NHL and AHL

Of Granlund's 335 career NHL games, 215 came with the Canucks. The Finnish center scored 41 goals, while recording 69 points and a plus/minus of -36. At the end of the 2018-19 season, Granlund signed with the Edmonton Oilers, where he would play one more year before heading back to Europe.

Granlund's first stop was the KHL, where he spent two seasons with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. He then moved to the NL in 2022-23, joining Swiss side HC Lugano. Granlund would play for HC Lugano for two years before signing with Genève-Servette HC ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Overall, Granlund had an impressive first season with Genève-Servette HC. He recorded 47 points in 39 games and helped his team make it to the semi-finals of the 2024-25 Champions Hockey League. Next season, Granlund will be returning to Genève-Servette HC, where he will have the opportunity to play with Jimmy Vesey, who also spent time in Vancouver.
