Quinn Hughes had a goal and four assists against the San Jose Sharks one year ago today.

November 2, 2023, was a special day in Vancouver Canucks history. Not only did the team record one of its most lopsided wins in franchise history, defeating the San Jose Sharks 10-1, but Quinn Hughes became the second defenceman in franchise history to record a five-point game. With the two teams set to go head to head on the first anniversary of the game, here is a look back at Hughes' historic night at the SAP Center.
Before diving into Hughes' game, let's take a quick look at the other defenceman who had a five-point night, Jeff Brown. The game in question happened on February 20, 1995, when Brown recorded five assists in an 8-2 win at the Pacific Coliseum against the L.A. Kings. Fun fact: like Hughes' five-point night, Rick Tocchet was also part of Brown's five-point night as he was a player for the Kings at the time.

Back to Hughes, his five-point night came in the form of one goal and four assists. Two of his four assists came on the power play, while his goal, which was Vancouver's third of the night, was assisted by Filip Hronek and Sam Lafferty. Hughes also provided the primary assist on Pius Suter's first goal with the Canucks, which made it 8-0 late in the second.
Not only did Hughes set a career-high in points, but also in penalty minutes. His six penalty minutes still stand as the most he has ever in a game during his NHL career. Unfortunately for Hughes, one of those penalties did lead to San Jose's only goal as Fabian Zetterlund broke the shutout late in the third to make it a 10-1 final score.
Overall, Hughes has had a ton of success against the Sharks since entering the NHL. In 15 games, he has 21 points, which is his second-highest total against a team behind only the Edmonton Oilers. Based on Hughes' track record and overall play to start the 2024-25 season, it is a safe bet to say he will be able to add to that point total tonight at the SAP Center in San Jose.
