Akil Thomas's hat trick helps lead Kings past Golden Knights in preseason outing.
LAS VEGAS – The Vegas Golden Knights are still looking for their first win this preseason, following a 4-3 overtime defeat to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesady at T-Mobile Arena.
Brendan Brisson, Jonathan Marchessault and Ben Hutton all scored, whiel Adin Hill made 24 saves.
Brisson is competing for a spot with Max Comtois, Pavel Dorofeyev and Paul Cotter. He scored with a beautiful wrist shot from the left circle, but he still finds himself on the outside looking in as the three ahead of him all need to clear waivers in order to return to the Vegas Golden Knights.
While Brisson is developing, he will likely begin the season in Henderson, unless something drastic takes place.
“Good to see him score,” Cassidy said. “It's something that he does well and not everyone scores from that area so that’s certainly a positive.”
In the second period, Mark Stone took a booming hit from Hayden Hodgson, prompting Alec Martinez and Brett Howden to come to their captain’s aid.
In all, six penalties were assessed in the fracas.
“I like the response,” Cassidy said. “I’m glad he came out of it OK.”
Stone didn’t speak lightly about Hodgson.
“Probably the last time I’ll probably play against that guy,” Stone said. “Not really much of a player.”
Special teams were one of the areas that the Vegas Golden Knights could improve.
Their No. 1 unit – Jack Eichel, Marchessautl, Stone, Chandler Stephenson, and Alex Pietrangelo – scored on a wonderful tic-tac-toe play.
It should be taken with a grain of salt, though, as the Golden Knights were essentially playing against the Ontario Reign.
That said, if the Golden Knights can move up a few spots in the power play rankings, they will be a much more difficult team to beat. They’re already difficult 5-on-5.
