The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired Alexander Holtz and Akira Schmid from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Paul Cotter and a third-round pick in 2025.
After trading Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals earlier today, the Golden Knights have replaced him with Schmid. Last year Schmid posted an .895SV% and 3.15GAA in 19 games at just 24 years of age.
Holtz was the seventh overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft and is a bonafide sniper. In limited ice time, the 22-year-old scored 16 goals and 28 points in 82 games. With just 110 games of NHL experience, Holtz is still very raw but has a lot of room for growth.
His shot is lethal and paired with the correct playmakers, he could be a prolific scorer in the NHL.
Cotter is on his way to the Devils after struggling to maintain consistent minutes with the Golden Knights. He played in 76 regular season games with the Golden Knights scoring seven goals and 25 points. The 24-year-old has yet to feature in a playoff game for the Golden Knights despite playing in 131 games in the last two seasons.
Cotter will get a fresh start in New Jersey and will look to make an impact on the Devils' bottom six, which is set to lose a couple of key players.
The addition of Schmid means Adin Hill will be the team's number one goalie and they'll move away from the tandem they've been running.
Holtz has one more year of his entry-level contract before he becomes an RFA and Schmid is currently an RFA with arbitration rights.
