Vegas Golden Knights forward William Karlsson is currently sidelined with an injury which will force him to miss out on the 4 Nations Face-Off and he will be replaced by Pittsburgh Penguins winger Rickard Rakell, according to Per Bjurman.
Karlsson was announced week-to-week on Jan. 23 with a lower-body injury and both he and Sweden were optimistic that he could be ready for the 4 Nations Face-Off. The tournament is set to begin on Feb. 12 and the 32-year-old has yet to resume skating, indicating that he is still far from returning.
Karlsson is now the second Golden Knights player to be removed from the tournament with an injury. Alex Pietrangelo shockingly removed himself from Team Canada's roster to treat an ailment that has been lingering throughout the 2024-25 season.
Replacing Karlsson will be Rakell. The 31-year-old winger is enjoying a great season, scoring 23 goals and 45 points in 53 games, forming great chemistry with Sidney Crosby and putting himself on pace to set career highs.
Rakell has represented Sweden on the international stage several times, winning gold at both the World Juniors and the World Championship.
Sweden has high hopes of winning this tournament but losing Karlsson will hamper their chances. His two-way game, leadership and winning experience would have played a crucial role in their success but they'll have to find other sources to fill that void.
