Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon received one second-place vote for the Jim Gregory GM of the Year award.

Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon received one second-place vote for the Jim Gregory GM of the Year award.

A trade deadline headlined by the acquisitions of Anthony Mantha, Noah Hanifin and Tomas Hertl, paired with an offseason of freeing up cap space to retain the players they acquired at the previous trade deadline was good enough to earn the 63-year-old a second-place vote.

Jim Nill, the GM of the Dallas Stars took home the award. His recent drafting mixed with the signing of Matt Duchene and the trade for Chris Tanev got the Stars past the Golden Knights and the Colorado Avalanche and into the Western Conference finals.

The top three were rounded out by Patrik Allvin of the Vancouver Canucks and Bill Zito of the Florida Panthers.

McCrimmon has never won the award despite the excellent work he's done with the Golden Knights. His fearless philosophy to trade for players and to find other ways to build the prospect pool is different from what the standard in the NHL has been and it's clearly been successful for McCrimmon.

With a challenging offseason ahead of him, if McCrimmon makes the correct moves and can build a roster that dominates the regular season and the playoffs, he could be a favourite to receive the honours of the award for the first time.

His decisions of what to do with Chandler Stephenson and Jonathan Marchessault will be the biggest decisions for him this season.
