The Ottawa Senators have been the main team in pursuit of Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark but recent reports suggest the Vegas Golden Knights and Detroit Red Wings could be sniffing around.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period named the five teams who have called or are interested in acquiring one of Logan Thompson or Adin Hill. The five teams were the Senators, Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes.
The Senators have been looking for a starting goaltender for many years now and are hoping to get a deal done with the Bruins to end their search but a recent report from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen suggests the Golden Knights and the Red Wings have been involved in talks to acquire Ullmark.
Ullmark was the Vezina trophy winner in the 2022-23 season and was once again part of the league's best goalie tandem with Jeremy Swayman. This season Ullmark played in 40 games posting a .915SV% and a 2.57GAA. As great as he was, the younger part of the duo overmatched him.
Swayman posted a .916SV% and a 2.53GAA in 44 games but took over the crease in the playoffs and stole the series against the Maple Leafs. The Bruins were likely to keep Swayman over Ullmark even before his performance in the playoffs due to the fact that Swayman is 25 and Ullmark is 30 but his dominance in the playoffs gave them the trust to commit to it.
Ullmark earns roughly the same amount annually as Adin Hill does and his contract ends after this season as well. Money-wise, losing Hill and replacing him with Ullmark would be a linear move but in terms of level, Ullmark has been a more consistent goaltender.
It's difficult to see how the Golden Knights would pull off this move based on what the Bruins are looking for in return. The Bruins are in search of a centre and the Golden Knights don't have one to give away. They are also very low on draft capital besides their first-round pick this year.
General Manager Kelly McCrimmon would be the man to get a deal like this done so it's never smart to count the Golden Knights out.
